How does the goverment employee fund operate ?

The Government Employees Medical Scheme is managed by a board of trustees of which 50% has to be appointed by the members of GEMS. The other 50% is employed by the employer.

The Government Employees Medical Scheme runs as a strictly non-profit organisation, which means that the contributions are pooled to benefit of the members of GEMS, and nobody else.

You as a member of the government employees medical scheme may participate in the managing of the medical scheme by attending the annual AGM (Annual General Meetings) where you can express and view your opinions, queries and issues to the board of trustees.

The DPSA has no involvement in the management of Government employees medical scheme. It purely acts a sponsor. It is an entirely seperate legal entity and is registered as a medical scheme under the medical schemes act.
